The Bull at Brantham is a beautiful Grade II listed building with parts dating back as far as the 16th Century. Alive with a real sense of history, many of the beams stretching across the Bull's interior are said to have come from the wreckage of the Spanish Armada. Like many river-side inns, the Bull was probably once the haunt of smugglers. A tunnel, through which contraband Brandy was carried, once ran from the cellar all the way to the river Stour. There are also numerous stories of ghosts including a young girl heard crying from the cellars, and a grayish gentleman standing behind the bar. The Witchfinder, General Matthew Hopkins was responsible for hanging a lady called Nancy on the green which once stood in front of the Bull. Today, the Bull is a family friendly pub restaurant and bar offering excellent food and a wide selection of drinks, including local Real Ales. Our large beer garden overlooks the River Stour and can be hired with a marquee and full catering for parties, weddings and other get-togethers.
